<marco> Hi, this is Marco! (Though you probably already knew that ;D)
<marco> How can I help you today?
godsspeed: (sideeye)

I feel like this needs a canon-typical blasphemy warning or something

most likely not.
the bible is an incomplete account of history, written by humans with an imperfect understanding of what was going on around them.
certain elements may have been left out or misinterpreted.

[ Is he... allowed to admit to this? He can't really check with a superior officer right now. Normally he'd err on the side of caution but he's mostly sure denying it would only make things harder on Marco. ]

you can find knowledge of such things buried in other historical records from around the world, but sometimes telling fact from fiction without the help of someone who was present can be difficult. it is the nature of these things.

few people truly are.
few angels truly are. we have some dedicated historians, but most of us are warriors.

We are defined by our roles and duties in a way that humans generally aren't, yes. It might be useful to think of us like you'd think of social insects, whose bodies and minds are shaped for the tasks they are born to fulfill.

[ Unfortunately for Marco, tone does not convey well across text! ]

well, not exactly. obviously i am more complex in my thinking than an ant.
but i was made to serve a very specific purpose, and everything about me is for it. my capacity for thought is a tool to be used in fulfilling my duties, whereas yours is in large part what makes you, you.

Dear Marco,

I found your calling card in my pocket the other day and it reminded me that it’s been months since I last saw you!

It feels strange, doesn't it? It always felt like a bizarre twist of fate when we ran into each other, but now that it hasn’t happened in a while, I’ve found myself missing your company. Maybe I was taking all those chance encounters for granted.

Anyway, I hope you’ve been keeping well and I’ll be looking forward to the next time our paths cross. I’ve been hearing a lot about the fishing festival coming up! Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to run into you there!!

Until next time,

P.S. Of course you wouldn’t be anywhere near a fishing festival! That would be horrible for someone like you. It was thoughtless and insensitive to bring it up and I hope you can find it in yourself to forgive me.

[The response comes about two hours later.]

Marco!

It's wonderful to hear back from you! I didn't think you would be able to reply so soon, but I guess these computer messages really are instant. It's pretty exciting, isn't it? Maybe these things really are the way of the future.

I'm glad there are no hard feelings, but whatever the case, you won't hear anything more about the fishing festival from me! I just can't believe people wouldn't know that something like that would upset you. You'd think it would go without saying, but some people truly are tactless.

All the best,

Dear Marco,

It seems strange not to sign messages, not to mention impersonal, but it's the not the strangest custom I've ever seen. I guess I'll just have to get used to it.

There is a lot to get used to here and there's some things you just can't ever get used to, but rest assured, I'm not inflexible! I can get by not signing my messages from now on!

That's a wonderful idea and I'll look forward to the next time we meet! You're welcome to drop by my place anytime!

And now that I'm thinking about it, where are you staying right now?

You're still living THERE?

I didn't think you'd be able to stay in a place like that if you weren't a merman anymore. Are you alright?

I can't remember exactly where, but I know it's in one of the lakes around here.

You know, I'm surprised you can stand to stay there right now. It must be intolerable not being able to breathe in your own home!

[The next response is preceded by a significant pause.

You've just blown his mind, Marco.]

If you don't live IN the lake, how do you sleep at night? Wasn't it uncomfortable?
